Daily Bible Verses for 11/15/2016
Bible Verse
He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.”
Reading Notes
Paul begins his conclusion of this chapter by reminding us of the security we have in Jesus. The words and phrases used by Paul in this section of scripture are reminiscent of the courtroom. Paul makes the case for our freedom and justification in Christ. The term used for “freely gives” carries with it the meaning of gifts given out of grace. In other words, because of God’s mercy and love toward us, He has freely given us through Jesus complete justification and inheritance in His kingdom. Paul also makes an important point for us in his discussion, that is, if while we were still enemies of God, separated by our sin, and yet Christ died for us, how much more will God do for us His dear children through faith! If God could do so much for us when we were at enmity with Him, how much more will He freely bestow His blessings on us, now that we have become children of God through our faith in Christ Jesus our Lord.
As we continue to read we see that Jesus is positioned at the right hand of God the Father. This once again shows us the authority and the power of Christ as the Second Person of the Trinity. And in this position of authority, Jesus is today making intercession on our behalf. So knowing this, what are we to say? What are we to do? We are to take refuge in the security of Jesus, knowing that even though we may suffer tribulation and loss, nothing can compare to what Jesus has waiting for us when we meet Him face to face. Therefore, if God is for us, who can bring a charge against us? In other words, when God looks at us, He doesn’t see our sin, instead He sees the righteousness of Christ Jesus, which has been freely given, or imputed to us because of our faith in Him. Therefore, because Jesus paid the price for our sins, once for all times, we are made righteous before a Holy God and no one can lay a charge against us because Jesus has already paid the price for us. And with our salvation secure, we are given a new spirit, and through the work of the Holy Spirit who now indwells us, we become a new creation in Christ Jesus our Lord.
