Daily Verse(s)
Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men.” She brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
Reading Notes
Our salvation is no small thing, it’s no accident Jesus stepped out of eternity and took on humanity for us! The Bible tells us that God knew before creation ever began, that He would send Jesus Christ to save us from our sins. Even more amazing the Bible tells us that before the foundations of the world were laid in place, Jesus chose us for Himself and determined to save us! The virgin birth was necessary in order for Jesus to become our perfect substitute at the Cross of Calvary. Without the virgin birth there is no hope or possibility of salvation. We needed someone who was fully human and completely sinless to stand in our place. Someone to take on the punishment of death that was due us because of our sins. A sinful man cannot die for another sinful man so they may enter heaven. If each sin is deserving of death and separation from God, how many times can a sinful man die for his sins? Moreover, no amount of good deeds or works can erase the penalty of death because of our sin!
Mankind was lost after the fall, we were unable to save ourselves, we were without hope because no amount of good works can ever earn heaven. And God knew this and that’s why He determined to send Himself. Jesus the eternal God of the universe stepped out of eternity and took on humanity. He did this in order that we, may live through Him. Jesus who is fully God and fully man, became our perfect substitute to take on the penalty of our sins. Jesus took on humanity with no loss of His divinity, this is called the “hypostatic union” by theologians. This term means that Jesus Christ is one person who is both fully God and fully man. Jesus’ two natures, human and divine, are inseparable. Jesus will forever be the God-man, fully God and fully human, two distinct natures in one person. Jesus’ humanity and divinity are not mixed, but are united without loss of either. Therefore, the Lord said, “I will give you a sign: ‘Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and she shall call His name Immanuel.'” Which means God dwelling with us!
