God Desires Brokenness – (Psalm 51:14-17)

Bible Verse
O God, The God of my salvation, And my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness. O Lord, open my lips, And my mouth shall show forth Your praise. For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart-These, O God, You will not despise.

Reading Notes
Psalm fifty-one was written by David during a time of sincere repentance. This psalm serves as one of the classic psalms, showing man’s repentance for sin and God’s forgiveness. God is looking for those who have a sincere heart toward Him, evident in a broken-spirit because of sin. God is looking for those who realize we cannot save ourselves, those who know and understand that our sin has separated us from a holy God. Because when we learn this and truly understand the implications, it’s then that we really see how wonderful God’s mercy is toward us. It’s then that we can see the true joy found in the saving grace of Jesus’ sacrifice for us and the eternity that can only be found in Him. Moreover, it helps us to truly understand the effects of sin in our world and the lives of all people. It’s important for us to really understand that Jesus the Author of all creation, became flesh and dwelt among us. Jesus stepped out of eternity, took on humanity and dwelt among us, in order that He could be our propitiation for sin.

And He did so to bring redemption to those who through God’s grace choose to accept Him by faith. Jesus having lived a sinless life accepted the punishment of the Cross in order to save us from the penalty of our sins and give us eternal life. God in order to stand in our place at the Cross, had to experience humanity, just as we have, but without sin. In order to take our place and take upon Himself the punishment for our sins, Jesus had to take on humanity. Jesus who is fully God and fully man, did this because we, a fallen humanity, had no possible way to save ourselves. We are unable to earn our salvation through any acts of kindness or good deeds. We have to remember that good deeds are God’s standard for our normal day to day behavior, they are not special and cannot erase the guilt of past sin. Therefore, to truly know and understand this, helps us to experience God’s joy. Because repentance requires a broken spirit. Our pride and ego only serves to block us from accepting Christ and experiencing the full love of God. It’s not until we understand God’s grace and the free gift of forgiveness, that’s been given to us through Jesus, that we can truly forgive others.
