The Scriptures Speak of Christ – (John 5:39-40)

Bible Verse
You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.

Reading Notes
Jesus is the fulfillment of Old Testament scripture. Moreover, the Bible from Old Testament to New Testament testifies of Christ Jesus our Lord. One of the primary purposes of the Old Testament Law was to point mankind to the need for a savior. God’s law which is perfect, shows us our need for a savior because it teaches us all are guilty before God’s perfect law, therefore it shows us we all have sinned before a Holy God and fall short. If we were to put it another way, no one has the ability to earn salvation, no one can be good enough or perfect enough to earn their way to Heaven. As we read the Old Testament we see that under the Law no one can be justified. In addition, the Messianic prophecies from the Old Testament prophets all pointed to Jesus. Throughout the Old Testament we see prophecies to both His first and soon to be second coming. Jesus is in fact the fulfillment of all Old Testament scripture.

The Old Testament pointed to the New Covenant, which is Jesus the perfect Lamb of God, who came to take away the sins of the world. Jesus is speaking to His audience here on this very point. Despite their religious fervor and despite their diligent searching and studying of the scripture they missed the whole point. They missed what was standing right in front of them. They missed that Jesus is their Messiah and everything they read and studied pointed to Him. They failed to understand that God’s word was pointing to Jesus as their long awaited Messiah. The lesson for us as followers of Christ is not to look past our Savior. To not get so caught up in religious activities or behaviors that we forget the whole purpose of our faith. Which is, Jesus has come in the flesh to save sinners and give eternal life and we are sinners in need. Our goal is to spread the message of freedom and eternal life through faith in Christ to those who are lost in darkness.
