Live with Eternity in Mind – (Ecclesiastes 3:11-14)

Bible Verse
He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end. I know that nothing is better for them than to rejoice, and to do good in their lives, and also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labor-it is the gift of God. I know that whatever God does, It shall be forever. Nothing can be added to it, And nothing taken from it. God does it, that men should fear before Him.

Reading Notes
Solomon, one of the wisest men who ever lived, wrote Ecclesiastes to warn people of the foolishness of living life based on man’s wisdom. He exhorted everyone to live by the wisdom of God revealed in His Word. Solomon was the wisest and richest man who ever lived past, present or future. He spent a good portion of his life trying everything humanity had to offer, in the quest for ultimate satisfaction. In the end when all was said and done, he realized the wisdom of man is futile and pointless. He also learned that no one can ever understand the ways of God. Moreover, Solomon learned there is nothing that can be done by man, which will add to or take away from the things of God. And this is especially true for our salvation. We are saved by faith in God’s grace through Christ alone.

God put eternity in the hearts of men and He created man for His eternal purposes. And Solomon in his wisdom, came to understand that there is nothing mankind can offer to fill the void in our hearts, other than a relationship with God through Christ. There is nothing other than God that can bring satisfaction and fulfillment, which will ultimately be realized when we return home with Jesus. Solomon is telling us that God’s creation is beautiful and perfect, even in a cursed world. And the fruits of one’s honest labor are a gift from God. Satisfaction is found in the acknowledgment of God’s wisdom, and the acknowledgment  of His sovereignty and His enduring and perfect work. Having a relationship with God through Christ, raising our families in a godly way, sharing the Gospel message and helping those in need around us as we are directed by the Holy Spirit, this is what brings meaning to our lives and satisfaction to our souls.
