Ask of God and Do Not be Double-Minded – (James 1:5-8)

Daily Verse(s)
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

Reading Notes
God does not want His children to hesitate coming to Him. God already knows and intends for the trials caused by this dark world to drive us back to Him. God desires for His children to rely on Him! God wants us to turn toward Him for answers! To rely on Him for peace, for guidance and for understanding as we grow and thrive in Christ Jesus our Lord. We have to remember God never intended for us to go through this fallen world alone without Him. That’s why He sent us His Holy Spirit to dwell with us until we go home to be with Him. The trials that we face in this dark world can come from many sources, including sin, the fallen world we live in as well as from the spiritual warfare that is waged all around us. And we were never meant by God to face these trials alone. We were not created to live separately from God, all humanity was created with the deep down need and desire for a relationship with God. This deep longing and desire which exists in every human being, is often referred to as a “God size hole, only the Lord can fill.” However, because of our sin nature and the nature of this fallen world, those who do not know Christ, try to fill this void with things the world has to offer. Only in the end, having achieved what the world told them to achieve, are left feeling empty, seeking an answer to that longing, eager to find what is missing.

This is one of the reasons why the trials we face in life are meant in part to show us our inadequacy to handle such darkness on our own without the Lord. Lastly, we have to understand God created us and He loves us dearly! Not only is God waiting for us as His children to ask for His guidance and help. But God wants to give us wisdom. And He wants to give it to us liberally in order that we can live an abundant life. A life that is pleasing to the Lord and productive for His kingdom. God is waiting to do this for us, out of the incredible love and joy He has for us. God will not withhold wisdom and guidance for His children who ask for wisdom. God has wisdom in abundance and He graciously waits for us to ask for wisdom and guidance. Because without wisdom and guidance from God the trials we face can overwhelm us. However, having wisdom from God helps us to view our lives and the trials we face from God’s perspective, with eternity in mind focussed on our witness for Christ. However, we are not to be double-minded in our faith and in our prayers. Often times, we as Christians try to live with one foot in God’s world, while keeping one foot in a fallen world, which is at enmity with God. We do so because we do not want to give up the things of this world. Instead, we want God to cater to our needs and our wants, while we live here in enemy territory, rather than for Him to call us out of our comfort, to serve others for Christ’s sake. And we do so all the while not understanding this is impossible and in the end, this attitude leaves us acting in rebellion toward God.
