Word of God Living and Powerful – (Hebrews 4:12-14)

Bible Verse
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.

Reading Notes
The author of this epistle has just finished stepping his Hebrew audience through the foundations of their Jewish faith, showing them that Jesus is indeed the long awaited for Messiah. Illustrating with the scriptures that Jesus, perfect in every way is the fulfillment of everything the scriptures are pointing toward. The writer then turns to the word of God, which he tells us is living and powerful, that the word of God is a discerner of the hearts of men. The word of God, which is the Bible is special! It’s God’s revelation to us regarding His interactions with mankind as they relate to His plan of redemption. Moreover, God’s word is truly part of a living and active process called sanctification. With our salvation comes the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and God’s process of spiritual growth which takes place in the hearts and minds of all who have accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior. This process of spiritual growth is called sanctification.

As the Holy Spirit changes us from the inside out, He does so through His special work in our spirit which as been made new as a result of our salvation. In addition, as we read God’s word the Holy Spirit uses that to penetrate not just our hearts and minds, but also our soul and our spirit. God’s word penetrates every level of our being. It works to change us from the inside out as we learn more about who God is and what He has done for us! Through His word we gain a godly wisdom for living a life pleasing to God. God’s word not only comforts and nourishes those who believe and accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior. But it also exposes the hearts of those who are just going through the motions. Those who have not truly committed to, or accepted Jesus. In addition, it condemns the hearts of those who would deny Jesus by making clear the penalty of sin we all bare. Giving us the choice to remain in sin or free ourselves by accepting the saving grace Jesus alone can offer.
